J.Crew’s Heritage Collection Is A Re-Release Of Popular 80s Garments That Put The Brand On The Map

J.Crew was founded back in 1983, a full 35 years ago. The brand initially launched in the 80s under the name Popular Merchandise, Inc. and did most of its business via catalog sales, as was the case with most brands back in the day. In 1989, Popular Merchandise dropped the name and became J.Crew when it opened its first retail store under that name at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan’s Financial District.

As was the case with most brands back then (like L.L. Bean, Abercrombie, etc) they sold surprisingly affordable ‘heritage-inspired garments’ that didn’t feature a prominent logo. Most of J.Crew’s iconic pieces from the mid-to-late 80s were designed by a man named Sid Mashburn who joined the company in 1985. He was responsible for many of the pieces that put J.Crew on the map back in the day.

J.Crew debuted the Heritage Collection this week which features many of those best-selling designs from Sid Mashburn. You can shop through the styles below, you can check out all of the men’s and women’s releases here. But as noted over on Gear Patrol, these items are selling out pretty quickly because it’s a limited release from J.Crew. So I wouldn’t procrastinate too much if you see something you like.
