This is the exact finale to the World Cup that most had hoped for. Aside from a USMNT miracle run, France versus Argentina is the best possible outcome.
FanDuel is giving away the house with this offer, so take advantage before they realize it. Just in case you skipped over it: Place a $5 bet on France or Argentina and get $200 back instantly! No matter who wins.
Now… who will win?
My money has been in France the whole time. It is going to stay there. That said, you can bet on either side and feel pretty good about it.
Argentina can win so long as Lionel Messi continues to will them to do so. La Albiceleste opened play with a stunning loss to Saudi Arabia, and then the magic showed up at the party. Argentina has looked great since that game, with Messi leading the way.
People will note that Messi is tied for the lead in the tournament in goals and think that this is the Messi of legend. It is not. The soccer star is in his last Cup at age 35. He is also playing behind the front line and selectively attacking. He is much more of a facilitator. A great facilitator, at that, but still not the Messi of old. It keeps him from being constantly marked, so it keeps working. And if Argentina wins, he is getting the Golden Boot.
“[I feel] a lot of happiness to be able to achieve this,” Messi told reporters. “To finish my World Cup career playing my last game in a final.
“Everything I’ve lived in this World Cup, what people experienced and how much the people back in Argentina are enjoying it all is very emotional.”
The rest of Argentina has been able to step up and play. That is what is most important. Julian Alvarez is finishing regularly. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has played solid all tournament, and keeper Emi Martinez is turning away what few shots the team has let through.
Argentina is no surprise to be in this position. It is an immensely talented squad.
France is still my pick.
There is plenty to like about Argentina, but the defending champs have what it takes to repeat. The lone (constant?) criticism that manager Didier Deschamps is going to mess it up for Les Bleus.
It is hard for him to do that, with France being the most complete team in the tournament. The team has proven that true throughout the play.
With all due respect to Messi, Kylian Mbappé is more than making his claim for the best player in the world. The two are teammates at Paris Saint-Germain and so are quite familiar with one another. Mbappé is a stunning talent that is tied with Messi for goals in the tournament. He is going to score in this game to seal the deal — and pass/take the torch from Messi.
Antoine Griezmann is playing superbly from the defensive side, and has helped facilitate several runs on the offensive side of the ball. Olivier Giroud has a staggeringly good Cup as well. At 36, it is certainly a bonus for the French that he has scored four goals. Few, if any, would have predicted that.
The team effort will have to continue for the French to beat Argentina.
“We’re going to take the time,” Deschamps said. “I tell this to my staff and players: ‘Take every moment in the day to really appreciate and savor the moment.'”
Fans of the sport should do likewise. Appreciate and savor this final. It should be an epic clash.
Thanks to FanDuel, you can play both teams and win! I still recommend to take France on the money line and get $200 back instantly.
