Kyle Shanahan Hilariously Explains That The San Francisco 49ers Have Been Planning To Trade For Christian McCaffrey For Years

While most of the football was busy watching the Thursday Night game between the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers were busy making the first big move of trade deadline season in the NFL.

The 49ers outbid the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills to land star running back Christian McCaffrey.

The move was a big one for the 49ers and according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, it was one that’s been in the works for a while. When he was asked about the move, Shanahan jokingly said that he told McCaffrey that this was the 49ers’ plan for 5 and a half years.

I told Christian this was our plan all along. We wanted to build a D-line first and then add him five-and-a-half years later.

The 49ers had the chance to draft Christian McCaffrey back in 2017. They had the 4th pick in the draft, but opted to draft Solomon Thomas instead. McCaffrey then went to the Panthers with the 8th pick.

As McCaffrey turned into a star, Thomas struggled to live up to his draft position. Thomas recorded just 6 sacks over 4 seasons with 49ers and the team even opted to decline his 5th-year option.

Now it looks like the 49ers have fixed that mistake by going out and getting McCaffrey to bolster their offense.

McCaffrey brings his 393 rushing yards, 277 receiving yards and 3total touchdowns with him to the 49ers as yet another weapon alongside Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk.

It may have taken over 5 years longer than many fans and some members of the 49ers organization would have liked, but Christian McCaffrey is finally in San Francisco.
