Another disappointing basketball season came to an end for Georgetown yesterday.

It ended with the Hoyas getting absolutely demolished for a 2nd consecutive game.

The 40-point loss to Creighton and 32-point loss to Villanova in the Big East Tournament were just the latest disappointments in a 2-year stretch that saw Georgetown become the clear worst team in the conference.

The tournament loss dropped the Hoyas to 7-25 on the season, which was actually an improvement from last year.

Unfortunately, it appears it wasn’t enough of an improvement to save their head coach’s job.

Today, Georgetown announced that Patrick Ewing would not be returning as the team’s coach.

In the aftermath of that announcement, it seems that the college basketball world all has one name in mind to replace Ewing.

Rick Pitino has been regularly mentioned as an option to be the next head coach at Georgetown.

I’m sure the rest of the Big East would not be thrilled to see Pitino return to the conference.

Pitino previously spent 8 years coaching Louisville in the Big East before the program headed to the AAC.

During his years in the Big East, the Cardinals never won less than 20 games and won at least 30 three different times. They won the conference’s regular season title twice in those years and the Big East Tournament 3 times. He also took them to the NCAA Tournament in each of their last 7 seasons in the conference and even won a national title.

He is currently coaching Iona and has just won the MAAC regular season title for the second consecutive year. The Gaels are the favorites to take the conference’s automatic bid in the MAAC Tournament.

If there is any coach out there who can turn this program around, it is Rick Pitino. He has found success at every stop throughout his coaching career and has taken 3 different programs to the Final Four.

Pitino has seemed reluctant to leave Iona when asked about that possibility, but maybe the allure of one last run with a Power 5 school would be enough to draw him away from the Gaels.
