The clock is slowly running out for NBA teams looking to make some major roster moves as they gear up for the home stretch of the season, and we’ve already been treated to a few notable transactions ahead of the trade deadline set for 3 P.M. on Thursday.
None of those moves have been bigger than the trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks, but there are plenty of other franchises who are making moves behind the scene in the hopes of adding a key piece or setting themselves up for the future by shedding some salary.
The Warriors have found themselves in an unenviable situation after losing Steph Curry to the leg injury that is expected to sideline the star guard for several weeks, which isn’t a great development for a Golden State team that’s fending off a very crowded pack of contenders that are lobbying for a Western Conference playoff spot.
On Tuesday, The Athletic took a look at some of the options the Warriors might explore before the deadline, and while there’s no way to know what they’re currently plotting, it would appear they have some serious financial incentive to send James Wiseman to another squad based on how much cash they’d be able to take off of the books:
He’s owed $9.6 million this year and $12.2 million next year, meaning that San Antonio, Detroit, Utah or Indiana could trade for him without sending anything back.
Such a transaction would save the Warriors about $51 million in salary and tax this year and an estimated $85 million in salary and tax next year; a total of $131 million in savings to dump a guy who rarely plays.
The second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has largely failed to live up to expectations, as he’s averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and less than one assist while clocking around twelve-and-a-half minutes in the 21 contests he’s participated in this season.
As a result, it’s unlikely the Warriors would get a massive haul in return, but when you consider the monetary weight that would be lifted if they moved him, it’s hard to imagine they’d be looking for too much.
