Russell Wilson is being open and honest about how he feels about getting benched by the Broncos.
Last week, Broncos head coach Sean Payton told the media that the team was benching Wilson not solely for financial reasons but to get a “spark offensively” under Jarrett Stidham.
On Friday, Wilson spoke for the first time since the benching and confirmed that the Broncos threatened to bench him if he didn’t rework his contract.
“They came up to me during the bye week, beginning of the bye week — Monday or Tuesday — and told me if I didn’t change my contract, my injury guarantee, I’d be benched for the rest of the year,” Wilson said. “I was definitely disappointed about it. It was a process through the whole bye week. We had just came off beating the Chiefs. I was excited obviously for us fighting for the playoffs. The NFLPA and NFL got involved at some point, I think.
“I wasn’t going to take away injury guarantees. This game is such a physical game. I’ve played for 12 years and that matters to me.”
Wilson went on to say that he wants to remain in Denver despite getting benched.
“I want to be here,” “I want to play here. I want to be able to win here. I want to win championships here. I want to give my all every week no matter what the circumstances are, no matter what the score is.”
Asked Russell Wilson if he wanted to talk. @ParkerJGabriel asked him as well as we talked with Russell. He agreed. He was very candid about his disappointment about #Broncos approaching him about adjusting contract during bye week. He said he still would like to stay in Denver.… pic.twitter.com/Kplo1iAUlg
