- The NCAA is taking some heat for a decision regarding CWS umpires
- A stat tracking social media account has been restricted from posting balls and strikes
- Fans have been quick to react on social media
Baseball umpires continue to be scrutinized for their calls on the field. Many fans are growing tired of the so-called “ump show” that seems to be becoming more and more common.
When umpires aren’t the centerpiece of a game, it typically means they’re doing their jobs correctly. But we’ve seen on too many occasions “the blue” unnecessarily interjecting himself into the action.
That’s been evident on both the college and professional level. This NCAA postseason, umpires have made some egregious calls that have had huge impacts on the outcomes of the season.
Over the course of the NCAA tournament, some big decisions have ended teams’ hopes of advancing to Omaha. There have been numerous occasions where fans and media have singled out these calls to no avail.
Now, it seems that the NCAA is trying to better mask the poor performance of its umpires on the sports’ biggest stage.
NCAA taking heat for trying to mask umpires’ bad calls
The Creighton Baseball Analytics Team has been posting data and statistics over the course of the NCAA tournament. Those stats include pitch speed, location, and spin rate, as well as exit angle, exit velocity, and distance for batted balls.
It’s the pitch location that’s drawing the most attention.
After tracking ball and strikes in previous contests, the account reported that it would no longer show its strike zone graphic.
Just an FYI for those wondering, we will not be sharing strikezone information for the remainder of the CWS.

Many are speculating that the NCAA is the one that made the call in an attempt to protect its umpires from being criticized for balls and strikes.
Does the NCAA not want it to be known their umpires miss strike calls at an unreasonable clip? https://t.co/rx4ZSsBzsu
