Jim Harbaugh is not even finished with his four-game suspension and there is already chatter surrounding his future at Michigan, or lack thereof. Did the offseason come early?!
For the last *checks notes* eight years, there has been constant speculation about Harbaugh’s desire to leave the college game for a return to the NFL.
Constant is not an exaggeration.Typically, however, things don’t really pick up until the end of the year. This past offseason was the loudest.
Harbaugh was immediately surrounded by NFL rumors as soon as the Wolverines lost in the Playoff. Multiple teams were reportedly interested in his services and the Broncos may have even offered him the job outright.
Meanwhile, Harbaugh repeatedly spoke out about his career plans and did a terrible job of assuaging fears from Michigan fans about his departure. In the end, though, he stayed.
Jim Harbaugh is still the head football coach at the University of Michigan.
But for how long?!
This, once again, is the question. Will Harbaugh go back to the NFL after this season?!
The 59-year-old head coach will complete his four-game suspension on Saturday. His return to the sideline will commence with a road game at Nebraska.
From there, No. 2-ranked Michigan will play:
- at Minnesota
- vs. Indiana
- at Michigan State
- vs. Purdue
- at Penn State
- vs. Maryland
- vs. Ohio State
Barring a catastrophic collapse, the Wolverines are expected to be in College Football Playoff contention come the final week of the year. Anything less would be a disappointment.
Either way, if Michigan gets in to the CFP or not, the Harbaugh noise will be deafening. It is already trending in that direction!
According to Matt Carchese of Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Harbaugh is already having “heavy discussions” with the Chargers about becoming their next head coach and talked about moving to Los Angeles with someone in his “very inner circle.” Here is what Carchese had to say:

Marchese might be right. He could be entirely wrong. Who knows.
Either way, Brandon Staley is still the head coach of the Chargers. It is only Week 4 of the college football season and Week 3 of the NFL season.
If this conversation is being had right now, imagine what it will be like come January. Sigh.
