Kirk Cousins is in the final year of his contract with the Minnesota Vikings, and based on the numbers he’s putting up, the 35-year-old is likely going to sucker one final team into thinking he could be the answer at quarterback.
Granted, while it’s only been two games, Cousins is putting up numbers that put him on pace for perhaps the most absurd statistical season in the history of the position.
In their opening weekend loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs, Cousins passed for 344 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Then, last night in the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football, Cousins threw for 364 yards, four touchdowns, and no picks.
As a result, if extrapolated across a 17-game season, Cousins is currently on pace for 6,018 yards, 51 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and the cherry on top, an 0-17 record.
Given the level that Cousins is currently playing at and his expiring contract, there has been some speculation that the New York Jets could reach out to the Vikings in an effort to trade for Cousins to fill the void created by Aaron Rodgers’ devastating injury.
While the Vikings might not be prepared to throw in the towel at 0-2, their games before the trade deadline on October 31 include matchups against the Los Angeles Chargers, Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Green Bay Packers.
Let’s assume that the Vikings lose to the Chiefs, 49ers, and Packers, and beat the Chargers, Panthers, and Bears — that would put their record at 3-5 with nine games to play. Would the organization rather be in a dog fight for a wild card berth or potentially get a first-round pick for a QB that they’ll likely lose for free next offseason anyway?
There’s also — albeit a remarkably small chance — that they could trade Cousins to the Jets and then re-sign him in the offseason, as Aaron Rodgers has seemingly confirmed his intention to rehab his torn achilles and play next season.
