Wednesday should have been a night to remember for Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell.
Instead, it turned into a night that Mitchell may want to hope his wife soon forgets.
But let’s back up a bit.
Unless you’re a Brewers fan, you may not be familiar with the name Garrett Mitchell. Mitchell was selected in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. But instead of going pro, he opted to play college baseball at UCLA.
That was a good choice.
The California native starred in three years with the Bruins and Milwaukee then selected him with the 20th overall pick in the 2020 draft.
Slowly but surely, he worked his way through the Brewers system. Mitchell made his MLB debut in 2022, playing 28 games for Milwaukee and hitting .312 along the way.
This year, he’s locked down a starting job in the Milwaukee outfield. And he’s off to a hot start, as well, hitting .300 with three home runs and five RBIs in the six games.
But no hit was as big as his walk-off home run against Adam Ottavino of the New York Mets on Wednesday.

After the game, Mitchell credited the walk-off home run to luck created by his wife, Haley, not attending the game.

“When my wife doesn’t show up to the games, usually something good happens,” Mitchell said. “Going into that at-bad I was like ‘man, she’s not here. So I might as well do something fun.'”
It was an absolutely hilarious comment. But his wife didn’t exactly feel the same way. She fired back on Twitter shortly after.

Hopefully for Mitchell’s sake, she’s not wrong. Your first-career walk-off home run is supposed to be a special moment. But it may have just laded Mitchell in the dog house.
