I’m not a huge theme-bar kind of guy. Too kitschy for me. Give me a bar with a couple of stools, some TVs, nice bartenders with good drink specials and maybe free pop corn or a hot dog and that’s all I need. Theme bars are great one-and-done experiences. We have a lot of theme bars here in New York: There’s Point Break, a bar themed after the surf movie classic in Midtown. There was the shortly-lived Stay Classy New York, a Will Ferrell Anchorman-themed bar in the Lower East Side. There’s the Beetle House, the Beetlejuice-themed bar. And right down the street, ‘MERICA, an ironic, shortly-lived hick-themed bar for hipsters in the East Village.
You get the point. Theme bars spring up like weeds in the spring rain in New York. DC is another story. A venture called the Cherry Blossom Pub is getting so much hype right now. It’s a millennial heaven thanks to Super Mario decor in every nook and cranny. And, honestly, it looks pretty badass:
The cocktails are all inspired by the legendary Nintendo video game, too:
While chilling there for the ‘gram is certainly fun, there’s one big, big downside: Because of all the millennial buzz, Thrillist is reporting wait times of up to two hours.
There’s a word for people who wait two hours for a cocktail just because it’s in some ’90s throwback:
Suckers.
But hey — That’s just the price of not having social medial FOMO. Judge for yourself:
