Yankee Stadium’s Parking Lot Might Become A Massive Drive-In Movie Theater This Summer

Normally this time of year the parking lot at Yankee Stadium would be completely full of cars carrying Yankee fans into the stadium but this year’s a little different. No baseball, no cars, no fans. The massive stadium parking lot in The Bronx has been sitting empty for over half a year but one group has grand plans for it this Summer.

The thing is, even if the MLB season begins and we have professional baseball being played inside of Yankee Stadium there still might not be any fans at all. In fact, there’s a solid chance that fans won’t be there. So the parking lot will continue to remain empty until around the 4th of July.

Marco Shalma of MASC Hospitality Group is planning a massive ‘Drive-In Movie Theater Film Festival’ that would offer an elevated drive-in movie experience. The festival would run over a month in the heart of the Summer and give Yankee fans and New Yorkers the chance to revisit this Cathedral of the Game.

A lot of details still need to be flushed out but the USA Today report makes it sound like this is going to happen:

Shalma is calling the summer series the Uptown Drive-in Experience. He aims to have the festival run right after July 4 and through August, with games, giveaways, movies, food and music performances.

Tickets – which will be charged per vehicle – are not yet on sale as final details, dates and partnerships are still being worked out. The event, held on private property, will be compliant with city regulations, Shalma says.

A change in New York’s reopening plans would be “the only thing that would stop this from happening,” he says.

How will it all work? Uptown Drive-In will have a vehicle reservation system, require cars to park 10 feet apart, feature giant movie screens, provide live music streamed through car radios and have sanitized restrooms available, Shalma says. (via USA Today)

If I was still in the city I would 100% attend several of these and not just because I used to park my car in the Costco/Target parking garage at 116th so it was easy to get to The Bronx, I’d go because this is probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something like this at Yankee Stadium.
