One of the most famous coaches in world sport is stepping away from the game this weekend as Liverpool Football Club manager Jurgen Klopp is stepping down after almost 9 years with the club and perhaps retiring from management for good.
Klopp’s impact has been felt in the sporting world far beyond just soccer, as his methods and musings have been studied and adored by the likes of Steve Kerr to new Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan citing him during his introductory press conference earlier this year.
"He's the man in charge. He sets the tone."
Klopp is more than a football manager. He is a transformational change agent. An example for other great sporting leaders. Like our mate Steve Kerr. Listen to Steve talk about his admiration for Jurgen in this clip… pic.twitter.com/o8vKfqBEVo

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver is from Liverpool and is therefore a lifelong Liverpool fan, so he made a recent appearance on the NBC Sports’ show Men In Blazers to pay homage to the departing LFC icon. Oliver was so overcome with emotion, in fact, that he got choked up while speaking about Klopp.
“Jurgen, guten tag. Wie geht’s? I understand why the person you are would not be interested in being a legend for something as fundamentally trivial as football. But you are one,” Oliver began.
“And it’s partially to do with football. But it’s bolstered by the fact that it’s actually to do with everything that was around it. What you’ve done for Liverpool fans, and for Liverpool as a city, and what you’ve got us through, which has been some tough times. You know, we’ve been through a bit. Those moments will be something we hold forever,” he continued.
“And it’s probably why, wherever you go in the world, for as long as you have on it, you’re going to be meeting very, very grateful Liverpool fans, who might get a bit more emotional than you or they think is ideal when they meet you. I might be one of them, Jurgen. I’m fundamentally dead inside but I don’t know what I’d be like around you. I think it’s probably best we don’t meet. Danke Schoen.”

When Liverpool won the Champions League in 2018/19 and the Premier League in 2019/20, the club’s first league title in 30 years, Oliver paid small homage to Klopp via the opening credits of Last Week Tonight, so it’ll be interesting to see if he has anything in store for Sunday’s episode, which will air just hours after Klopp’s final match as Liverpool manager.
