Report Claims Los Angeles Lakers May Not Have Enough Ammo To Trade For A Star

Anthony Davis and LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers need to significantly upgrade the roster this offseason if they want to compete with the top teams in the Western Conference. Their 4-1 series defeat to the Denver Nuggets in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs illustrated they simply don’t have enough firepower right now.

But, with Anthony Davis and LeBron James, who is expected to re-sign with the Lakers this offseason, taking up so much of the salary cap, it’s hard for the Lakers to make a move to add another star. That player would likely be a guard, and someone like Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell fits the bill.

Mitchell, 27, has been an NBA All-Star in the last five years, three with the Jazz and two with the Cavaliers. But, rumors are that he’s unhappy in Cleveland, and could be seeking a trade to a bigger market.

He’d be a great fit in Los Angeles, as he would take a lot of the scoring and playmaking weight off of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. But, it seems as if Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman doesn’t think the Lakers have enough to get a deal for Donovan Mitchell done.

Here’s Hoops Wire with more.

According to NBA insider Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell is the Los Angeles Lakers‘ number one trade target.

However, don’t expect Mitchell to land with the Lakers. A source told Hoops Wire that Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert “would never” trade Mitchell to the Lakers. Mitchell doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

The problem is, the Cavs simply don’t believe that the Lakers could possibly put together a package good enough for Mitchell. One potential trade package

revolved around Jamie Jaques Jr. and Tyler Herro coming back from the Heat.

It’s fair to extrapolate this piece of information and argue that the Lakers are simply not going to be able to swing a deal for a big star this summer. Could that mean LeBron heads elsewhere? Who knows.

But, it likely means that the Lakers are drawing dead when it comes to building a championship team for next season.
