With all do respect to reigning league MVP Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson is the best player in the WNBA right now and it may not be all that close.
Wilson, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft and a two-time league MVP (and reigning finals MVP), is off to an absurd start to the 2024 season and on pace to break countless records.
And yet her remarkable play is being overshadowed by the ongoing Caitlin Clark drama, exemplifying the problem facing the WNBA right now.

Caitlin Clark Has Outshined A’ja Wilson Despite Wilson’s Far Better Play
Clark’s play has been spotty at best. She won the league’s Rookie of the Month award for May. Though she was inefficient at best in the process.
Clark is the most popular figure in the WNBA. It’s not even all that close, really. The television ratings shows it. The attendance numbers show.
Love her or hate her, people are tuning in to see Caitlin Clark. Specifically, Caitlin Clark.
But back to Wilson.
NBA star Draymond Green recently stated that she should be the face of the league.
“The best thing since sliced bread in the WNBA is A’ja Wilson. I’m not necessarily in the mindset that it’s all Caitlin Clark. No. A’ja Wilson is great. A’ja Wilson to me is the American dream. Coming from a two-parent household, grew, got better, young black girl, had everything against her, beat the odds to become what soon will be known as the greatest player to ever grace the WNBA. That’s quite honestly my opinion. I think A’ja Wilson is as marketable as anybody in the WNBA, but you have to figure out how to market the product.”
Green has a point. Wilson is an exceptional basketball player who comes across and wildly likable.
But for several reasons, she hasn’t resonated in the way Clark has.
Is that the league’s fault? Is it Wilson’s fault? Or is it just part and parcel of the entire package?
That’s up for debate. But it’s a major problem, and it shows why, just weeks into Clark’s career, the WNBA looks like an ouroboros.
