- The Tennessee baseball team was ranked No. 1 nearly all season long
- They were then upset by Notre Dame in the Super Regionals
- Now, they’re coping by saying they beat both of the national title contenders, including sweeping Ole Miss
The Tennessee Volunteers were the top ranked baseball team for nearly all of the regular season.
Most, in fact, would tell you that they were college baseball’s best club. The Vols ran away with the SEC crown, posting a 57-9 overall record and a 25-5 conference mark. To cap off the impressive regular season, Tennessee then won the SEC Tournament, cementing themselves as the best team in the best league in college baseball.
But things don’t always work out as planned, and the best team doesn’t always come out on top.
After landing the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Vols were upset in the Super Regionals by Notre Dame. Tennessee lost the best-of-three series to the Irish, ending what had been historic season. It also scrubbed any College World Series hopes from the team.
Instead of making a trip to Omaha, the Volunteers had to stay put in Knoxville. The sport’s most dominant team was sent home early to watch eight other participants make their way through the CWS.
Things got worse when the Vols saw the national championship matchup.
Ole Miss and Oklahoma, two teams the Vols had beaten handily in the regular season, would compete for the title. Similar to what we saw from Kentucky fans in March Madness, Tennessee fans decided to make the World Series matchup about themselves as a way of coping.
Tennessee baseball fans declare the Vols ‘Transitive Property Champs’
Many around social media were quick to point out that the Volunteers had actually beaten both Ole Miss and Oklahoma during the regular season.
The posted a sweep over the Rebels while beating the Sooners in the only head-to-head matchup, outscoring their opponents by nearly 30 runs over the four games.

I thought when Tennessee played Oklahoma in one game and Ole Miss for three games that I was looking at a team that would play for the national championship.
So … I was right.
Never mind the particulars. Just know I was right and leave it at that. Please and thank you.

34-7. Total score when Tennessee played against Ole Miss and Oklahoma this year. I can’t watch them play for a national championship. I’m bitter.
