Depending on who you’re talking to (namely, me), it can be argued that Denis Villeneuve is currently Hollywood’s preeminent filmmaker. While he himself may not quite be a household name yet, his filmography certainly is, as there’s no director in Hollywood who has put together as strong of a past decade as Villeneuve.
Just look at his truly remarkable recent filmography. Bangers on top of bangers on top of bangers.So, naturally, when it was announced that Villeneuve was being tasked with rebooting Dune — the 1965 sci-fi book turned into a 1984 cult classic by David Lynch — movie fans around the globe were ecstatic, as the combination of Villeneuve and Dune is a perfect marriage of director and source material.
It also helps that the cast is legitimately incredible, as the film is set to star Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Issac, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Javier Badem, and more.
Now, with Dune set to finally be released in theaters this December (fingers crossed), fans have finally been given their first look at the film, as Vanity Fair has shared the first photo of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, who is the primary hero of the story.
This is the first look at Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides on his native planet of Caladan from this December’s film version of the novel, directed by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. The 1965 book was so seismic in its influence that its echoes still turn up in sci-fi and fantasy storytelling half a century later. Still, it has stubbornly defied appropriate adaptation itself.
As the Atreides family leaves the oceanic world of Caladan to take over scorching Arrakis, they are also becoming prey to the brutal rival House Harkonnen, which seeks to exploit the desert world they are about to inherit. At this time, Dune is set to hit theaters in the United States on Friday, December 18.
