There is a theory that will be used this week in many analysis of the Thursday Night Football game. You will most certainly hear it from Al Micheals within minutes of the broadcast, “teams shorten the playbook on short weeks.”
Maybe the Washington Commanders will, I don’t know, they are on the road, which might limit what they can put in. But if the staff does parse it down, it plays into the favor of the home-dog, Chicago. Which will not have to.
I, like you, probably would ignore this game if it were not on Thursday Night Football. But since it is, it gives a great opportunity to go to the window with a winner. Both teams are coming off of last-drive blunders that cost them victory. The Bears had a reception stripped away from them into a turnover for Minnesota to close the game on the Vikings 39. Washington threw an interception in the final seconds in the redzone to lose to Tennessee.
The Bears will bounce back better and it will do it this week in an ugly victory against Washington.
Chicago is last in the league in plays per game. It is also one of the most dedicated to running the ball, with 160 attempts, fifth-most in football.
The Bears have only thrown 88 passes, last in the league by nearly 50 passes. It does not need to change its gameplan at all, short week or not. Chicago can run its offense as normal. It also lines up perfectly against a sub-par Washington defense. The Commanders defense is ranked in the middle of the pack in rushing, but 25th in the league on yards per play. It has allowed 11 touchdowns through the air versus just one interception, and allows the 8th-most yards passing.
On offense, Washington also is a middle of the pack team but is among the league leaders in turnovers. Carson Wentz has not been good. He is second in the league in interceptions. He has also been sacked the second most times. Without Jahan Dotson, the receiving group continues to look sluggish and unable to get separation.
If Washington continues to be unable to run the ball, and turns it over as it has, this becomes an early night. Chicago is going to run the ball and take a few shots. Against the Commanders, those shots are likely to land. Chicago can not be this bad at passing and there is acceleration to the mean as its offense doesn’t change on the short week; takes advantage of a more vanilla Washington defense.
Add in the home-dog disrespect and take the moneyline to get $200 back (plus your winnings) when the Bears win!
