For the 3rd consecutive season, the Houston Texans have earned a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft.
This year it will be the draft’s top pick as long as they don’t cost themselves that pick by beating the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.
While that pick will give their franchise and its fans hope that there could be better things to come, it looks like that hope might not be enough to save their head coach’s job.
Lovie Smith took over as the head coach of the Houston Texans this season after they surprisingly fired Nick Caserio after he had only led the team for one year.
Now Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Houston Texans could decide to look for a new head coach for a 3rd consecutive season.
Lovie Smith has been meeting with #Texans owner Cal McNair to state his case for a second season, per sources. People familiar with the dynamics in Houston believe Smith may be one-and-done, though no decision has been communicated.

When Smith was hired, there were some who believed that he was being brought in as a short-term answer while the Texans figured out who they wanted their head coach to be long-term. Those people appear to have been correct.
This firing also makes more sense than last year’s firing of Caserio. Caserio took over a team with a star quarterback who wanted to leave and a mess at the position without him. They were arguably the worst roster in football and still won 4 games.
This year, they got much better at running back, had Davis Mills with a year of experience under his belt, and were still playing in football’s worst division. This year they hold a record of 2-13-1.
It looks like that disappointing outcome will lead to a new head coach taking over the team as they prepare to draft what they hope will be their franchise quarterback.
