Carlton Linguard will not finish his college basketball career at UTSA. Or so says his agent.
However, the 7-footer’s NIL representation has a past that raises questions.
Linguard, a former JUCO transfer, played his sophomore and junior seasons at Kansas State from 2020-2022. He later entered the transfer portal and landed at UTSA in May 2022.
Due to transfer rules, the Texas-native did not see action during his year in residence last year. Now, as a redshirt senior, Linguard is averaging 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Roadrunners in 21 games with 16 starts in 2023/24. His lone year of action in San Antonio will, apparently, be his only year with UTSA.
Chris Wash teased that his client is going to transfer as a graduate student after the season.
Although it is not illegal or against any rules for Wash to declare his client’s intentions, there is an ethical component here. The Roadrunners have 10 games left in the current campaign and it’s just not a good look.
Wash’s declaration makes it seem like Linguard has no desire to stick with his team for another season, or even through the end of this college basketball season, because he is already looking forward to a new opportunity. It sounds as though he focused is on the future, not the present.
That might not be what Linguard is actually thinking, but it is certainly feels that way to me based off of his agent’s post.
To make matters worse, there is a lot of scrutiny that surrounds Wash and his practices. He got very defensive in the replies to his post.
It started when someone (@Ritter_1414) replied to Wash (@TXRecruited) with NCAA concerns. The exchange escalated from there.
“Someone needs to report this to the @NCAA there’s no way that this is allowed lmao” — @Ritter_1414
“Yes asap!!!! It’s so illegal to state a players status . Losers lol” — @TXRecruited
“You’re a scam artist and everyone knows it it’s been hilarious watching these kids drop you left and right” — @Ritter_1414
“Not one player has dropped me sign players every week. Go back to your parents basement. Salty tech fan haha” — @TXRecruited
Putting all of the allegations against Wash aside, I personally would not want my agent to be acting in such a manner on social media. Especially if I am Linguard. It’s just not a good look!
The claims about Wash’s past are also rather unusual. Who is he?
First and foremost, Wash lists himself as “NIL Certified” through Front Office Sports in his bio. Even if it is valuable in its teaching, the FOS certification is a free course that takes approximately two hours to complete. Anyone can sign up. Being “NIL Certified” through FOS, while helpful, does not indicate any kind of legitimacy as an agent.
In addition, a quick Google search of “Chris Wash scam” (inspired by @Ritter_1414’s claims) pulls up a concerning article written by Trevor Lovec of the Wisconsin athletics-focused website ‘Badger Notes.’ It is titled:
“Wisconsin Football Recruitment Affected by Fraudulent NIL Agent”
Lovec’s article is about Leon Lowery, a Syracuse linebacker that ultimately transferred to Wisconsin. The Athletic also wrote an in-depth profile about his lengthy transfer recruitment.
Both articles raise some questions about Wash, even if Lovec’s post is written with a bias.
Lowery was initially represented by the Texas-based agent. He later fired him and his partner.
Lovec and Jesse Temple’s articles provide a good understanding of what happen. Seems sketchy.
Now, less than two months later, Wash is firing back at trolls on X after declaring that his client is likely going to abandon his current team in a matter of weeks. Yeesh.
