Examining The $150 Madden-EA Sports College Football Pre-Order Bundle: Is It A Good Deal?

On Thursday, the much-anticipated release date of EA Sports College Football 25 was finally revealed, with the game officially being released on July 19. That is welcome news to the millions that have waited a decade for the game.

Actually, EA Sports announced a few different ways and price points to buy the game, including a Deluxe Edition and an MVP Bundle with Madden’s 25’s Deluxe Edition The bundle comes in at $150, a pretty heavy price point for those who may be just getting back into football gaming after ten years without a licensed college football video game.

Many are probably wondering if buying the bundle is worth it. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of the MVP Bundle.

The Pros

First off, let’s set up what the bundle includes. It’s not just access to the two games for $150. There are a lot of perks that come with it.

As for the price point, it seems like a good deal on the surface, especially if you plan on buying both the Madden and EA Sports College Football Deluxe Editions. The EA Sports College Football 25 Deluxe Edition is retailing for $99.99, and Madden 24’s deluxe edition cost that same amount. So, essentially, you’re saving $50.

The biggest thing that jumps out in terms of perks is the three-day early access. If you’re someone that has been nostalgic about the days of having an updated licensed college football game with modern graphics, that’s a big perk.  And, it could give you a head start on Ultimate Team, which is a mode many of you may not be familiar with.  It also gives three days early access to Madden, if you’re a big Madden player.

Speaking of Ultimate Team, most of the remaining perks for buying it revolve around that game mode, which is coming to EA Sports College Football 25. While it was in NCAA Football 14, the last college football licensed simulation game, it was not a popular game mode. Since then, Ultimate Team, or similar game modes in other sports titles, has become the main way a lot of sports gamers play.

Basically, you collect “cards” of players which can be used online against other players in head-to-head play. Cards can be earned, or points can be bought with real money to open up packs that contain cards. It’s widely panned, but a lot of people do like it.

If you’re interested in Ultimate Team, than those 4600 College Football Points, the Heisman Hopeful Player Item, and other related perks are definitely worth the extra money. That will give you a huge leg up in Ultimate Team against players who wait to play the game on the official release date. You’ll already have some of your team built up, and they’ll be starting from scratch with fewer resources after the early release period ends.

And, the fact that they’re allowing one of the free packs to come from a team of your choice is pretty cool. As a Penn State graduate, of course I’d want to build my team around a Penn State legend or current star.

And, let’s say you haven’t been playing Madden lately. While it hasn’t been announced yet, I’d say that it’s likely that you will be able to export draft classes from EA Sports College Football 25 into this year’s Madden. If you’re someone who isn’t going to want to stop playing with the awesome five-star quarterback you recruited to Louisiana-Monroe in your dynasty after he leaves for the NFL, you may be able to do that in Madden. That could also work for a potential Road to Glory mode. That feature in past college football games allowed you to take a player in their senior year of high school, show out for the scouts, get scholarship offers, and play out a college career as a player. That player previously could be exported to the Madden mode that worked essentially the same way

Overall, there are definitely some big pros to getting the deluxe edition.

The Cons

There are two main cons to buying the MVP Bundle.

The first is the fact that not all of those who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the first real college football video game in eleven years aren’t Madden players.  if you’re not planning on playing Madden at all, no matter what, then this would be a pretty big waste of $50. Just buy the Deluxe Edition of EA Sports College Football 25 for $99.99 and call it a day.

The other main con is that most of the benefits that come with the MVP Bundle are related to the Ultimate Team mode. Yes, a lot of people do play Ultimate Team-type modes in other sports games. But, a lot of people absolutely despise those game modes and think they’ve ruined sports games. If you’re just interested in grinding out a dynasty mode, there seems to be little upside to the MVP Bundle.

Plus, we’ve all waited eleven years for a new game. The early release is a Tuesday, and the regular release is a Friday.  Why not wait three more days and save $30 on the purchase price? How much time will people really have to play before the weekend, anyways?

Is It Worth It?

That’s up for you to decide. To me, if you plan on playing Madden NFL 25 a little bit and dabbling in the Ultimate Team on EA Sports College Football 25, it’s probably worth it.

But, if you’re just looking to play Dynasty Mode, maybe you should pass on the MVP Bundle.
