Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has received more attention in the last 2.5 months than he probably ever will again.
That’s because Hamlin had a terrifying near-death experience when he collapsed during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to sudden cardiac arrest.
Thankfully, Hamlin is on the road to recovery and doctors believe that he will make a full recovery. Some even believe he’ll be able to return to an NFL field.
Hamlin has received support and recognition from anyone and everyone across the football world and was a guest of the league at Super Bowl 57. The NFL honored the 24-year-old prior to the game and he received a standing ovation.
But not everyone was impressed.
Former NFL MVP and likely Pro Football Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson was one of those who were not. Peterson called out Hamlin on Instagram for wearing a jacket that seemingly portrayed a caricature of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Peterson, a devout Christian, called the jacket “blasphemy.”

After talking with my parents I understand how my coat could have offended some people. It was never my intentions to hurt or disrespect anyone, the coat is abstract art to me. It says Eternal which I am Eternally thankful to my Savior! (1/2)

My beliefs and Relationship with God is not tied to symbolic images. I will learn from this and continue to walk in Love as I ALWAYS have. Matthew 7:1-5

‘After talking with my parents I understand how my coat could have offended some people. It was never my intentions to hurt or disrespect anyone, the coat is abstract art to me. It says Eternal which I am Eternally thankful to my Savior!’ he said in a tweet.
“My beliefs and Relationship with God is not tied to symbolic images. I will learn from this and continue to walk in Love as I ALWAYS have. Matthew 7:1-5,” he continued.
Not everyone felt that Hamlin needed to apologize.
Felony child abuser and domestic violence perpetrator, Adrian Peterson, confronted Damar Hamlin over this jacket accusing him of being “blasphemous.” He has sent the right wing mob after him for this. When Damar said it was a devotion to god that led him to wear it. https://t.co/16X70q2QD2 pic.twitter.com/25l9LAOosh

The good news is that regardless of his beliefs and how he expresses them, Hamlin is back living a largely normal life. Because just months ago it looked like that may not be the case.
