Dak Prescott was all over the news cycle this week after it was reported he claimed he “won’t throw 10 interceptions” in the upcoming NFL season.
However, it sounds like the Dallas Cowboys want to clear the air, as the organization wants everyone to know that their star quarterback was misquoted.
The original report from Gabriel Trevino of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram claimed that Dak Prescott was discussing throwing interceptions and that tipped balls were big problem for the Cowboys.
Here is the original report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“‘I know who I am, and you can go back and take away half of those off drops. I’m not saying it’s on the receiver, but if you cut that in half then we start talking about those, nobody is talking about it… Some of it is the offense and them understanding exactly where we are. Mike [McCarthy] does an amazing job with those guys. They know where to be, why to be, when they’re getting looked at. That’s going to be a big jump. I won’t have 10 interceptions this year.”
But according to Sports Illustrated, “the team said on Tuesday that those were not the quarterback’s words, and that he was rather speaking about improved chemistry with his receivers that would lead to a reduction in tipped interceptions.”
With that said, this is what the Cowboys claim to be the real quote by Dak Prescott.
“Do I blame those receivers, no. Mike does an amazing job [with the receivers]. They know where the hell to be, why to be and when they’re getting looked at. That’s going to be a big jump, I think. We won’t have those tipped interceptions this year.”
When it’s put that way, Prescott’s comments make a lot more sense. He’s not throwing anybody under the bus or anything.
In fact, it’s the opposite. So, hopefully he can cut down on the interceptions, as that will give Dallas a major advantage throughout the 2023 season.
Last year, Dak Prescott tied for first most interceptions thrown alongside Josh Allen. He’ll have to throw six less interceptions next season to get below 10.
So, it’ll be interesting to see if the Cowboys quarterback can pull it off. He sounds confident that chemistry is building between himself and his wide receiver group. But only time will tell if it actually translates on the field.
