John Lynch and the San Francisco 49ers have a conundrum on their hands.
They used the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select a project quarterback in FCS star Trey Lance.
The team has already jettisoned Jimmy Garoppolo – a quarterback who the 49ers kept trying to get rid of despite going 42-19 as a starter for them, including the post-season.
They’ve also got Brock Purdy – a quarterback who despite being the very last player drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft, went 5-0 with a 107.3 QB rating (plus 2-1 in the post-season with a 109.8 QB rating).
Of the three quarterbacks, Trey Lance – the one the San Francisco 49ers have the most invested in – has so far been the worst of the three.
The Niners knew Lance was going to need time to develop. He played just one full season in college. He only played in one game the entire year before he was drafted due to the pandemic. And all of those games were played for North Dakota State against significantly easier competition than what’s found in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
So what are they going to do when the 2023 NFL season rolls around?
Purdy is currently recovering from a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. Lance, on the other hand, has missed games with a sprained knee, suffered through a right index finger injury, and suffered a season-ending ankle injury in 2022 which unexpectedly required a second surgery near the end of December.
When asked this week about Trey Lance and how he has been doing this off-season, 49ers general manager John Lynch appeared to have a “tell” that was hilariously similar to one that Jerry Seinfeld pointed out to George Costanza in the episode called “The Wallet.”
