Sports betting is big, big business in the United States these days.
And perhaps no event exemplifies that quite like the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl 58 is expected to be the biggest betting event of the year by far, with sportsbooks anticipating over $20 billion in bets according to the American Gaming Association.
Sportsbooks Anticipating Americans To Bet $23. 1 Billion On Super Bowl 58
The association’s research suggests that a record number of people will bet a record amount of money on this year’s big game.
“A record 68 million American adults (26%) are expected to bet $23.1 billion on Super Bowl LVIII, a 35 percent increase from 2023 estimates, according to American Gaming Association (AGA) research,” the study says. “Bettors plan to wager an estimated $23.1 billion on this year’s Big Game, up from $16 billion last year.”
That’s a nearly 50 percent increase from the year prior.
Data firm Morning Consult conducted the survey on behalf of the AGA. It polled 2,204 adults and included bets placed online, with a casino or with an unlicensed bookie. Additionally, it included those taking part it a Super Bowl pool or squares contest as well as casual bets among family and friends.
Projections show that “42.7 million American adults plan to place a traditional sports wager online, at a retail sportsbook or with a bookie.”
That number is also up nearly 50 percent from a year ago. A further 36.5 million plan to bet casually among friends and family.
But that may not tell the entire story.
The survey did not say whether it included prop bets unrelated to the game.
Sportsbooks across the country are offering numerous Taylor-swift related props. Those bets, which include a potential post-game proposal, could rope in an entire new segment of bettors.
Who knows if it’ll be the Chiefs or 49ers lifting the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night?
But one thing is certain, Vegas always wins.
