In this week 2 matchup, we have a juggernaut team facing off against a middle-of-the-pack team seeking to finally break through. Yet, interestingly enough, it’s the juggernaut Buffalo Bills that come into this game with a 0-1 record, while the visiting Las Vegas Raiders come in fresh off a win in Denver. Since 1990, just around 11% of NFL teams that started the season 0-2 have ended up making the playoffs, so despite Buffalo’s lofty preseason expectations, this is a crucial game to keep their season on track. Both of these teams are coming off an emotional/tight divisional game, so we’ll see whether their varying results in those games will affect them here.
The Vegas Raiders started the post-Derek Carr era with a bang, as their new QB Jimmy Garoppolo had an efficient first game with his new team and led them to a divisional road win over the Denver Broncos. The Raiders have started seasons off really slow in recent history, so getting off to a 1-0 in head coach Josh McDaniels’ second season is a big deal. Vegas trailed in the 4th quarter, but Jimmy G found fellow offseason acquisition Jakobi Meyers for a 6-yard score with just under 7 minutes remaining to take a 17-16 lead they would never relinquish. Star WR Davante Adams was held in check for his standards, with just 6 receptions for 66 yards, so he will look to get going against the tough Bills defense and continue to build up his chemistry with his new QB.
The Buffalo Bills will be playing a home game for the first time this season, and they are really in need of a bounce-back effort. Their superstar QB Josh Allen had a rough season debut, to say the least, throwing 3 interceptions and adding a fumble after running into his own teammate. However, this Bills defense showed how good they are, as they still managed to almost will the team to a win despite the offense producing very little in the second half. Unfortunately, Jets WR and Hard Knocks star, Xavier Gipson, returned a punt for a game-winning touchdown in OT to stun the Bills. If we’re being real, a team as good as the Bills cannot afford to drop games at home against mediocre teams, such as what they face in their home opener this week, and I think the Bills are going to be hungry and come away with a convincing victory. Don’t overthink it; take Bills Mafia at home this week.
