The Boston College Eagles are not a particularly good college football team.
In fact, the Eagles went just 3-9 a year ago and are projected to finish at the bottom of the ACC yet again in 2023.
But even bad teams have highlights, and BC may just have had one of the highlights of the year on Saturday against Northern Illinois.
Boston College starting quarterback Thomas Castellanos transferred to the Eagles after spending his freshman season at Central Florida.
“The 6-0, 190 pound Castellanos hails from Georgia and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. He played sparingly across five games his freshman season with the Knights. Most notably, he went 6-6 in a rout against Temple, and came on against Tulane in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game,” Niraj Patel of BC Interruption said of the move. “More recently, Castellanos put on a strong showing at UCF spring game just a couple of weeks ago. He was competing to take the starting job from John Rhys Plumlee over the spring, but now his departure leaves a bit of a hole for Gus Malzahn’s team. The dual-threat quarterback was actually the first QB to commit when Malzahn when he took the job two seasons ago.”
Castellanos then won the job at BC, and showed why on Saturday.

Facing a 4th-and-5 against the Northern Illinois Huskies, Castellanos dropped back to pass. He rolled right to avoid a rush, but found nobody open downfield. He then doubled back, dropping even farther behind the line of scrimmage.
After evading to pass rushers, Castellanos took off back toward the line of scrimmage before firing a dart to his wide receiver for a first down.
Fans couldn’t believe what they’d just seen.

I know we're all watching this amazing Colorado/TCU game, but elsewhere, Boston College converted the wildest 4th and 5 in college football history. https://t.co/JJMwVUhzfw

It’s likely to be a long season on Chestnut Hill. But they’ll always have “that one play.”
