The New York Giants’ new general manager, Joe Schoen, inherited a bit of a mess from Dave Gettleman.

It’s no secret that he’s going to need to sacrifice some players to fix their cap situation and try to right the ship. However, you wouldn’t expect him to acknowledge that he could trade one of the team’s stars.

Today, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan asked him about the possibility of trading Saquon Barkley and Schoen didn’t sound opposed to the idea.

So far in his career, Barkley has been a star more based on where he was drafted and his marketability than actual on-field play, but it’s still a bit surprising to hear this sentiment from the new Giants GM. Depending on what the Giants can get in return, this could be an admission that the previous regime got the Saquon pick horribly wrong.

He was drafted 2nd overall by a Giants team that needed help all over its roster and after 4 seasons, could be traded and might not even be worth a second rounder.

Still, trading Saquon is likely the best option for the Giants right now because it would be a mistake for them to extend him beyond this season and they might as well get something for him before he leaves in free agency. A trade would also get them pretty close to the salary cap and retain some other player they view as more important to their long-term project.

With a comment like this, it also makes you wonder about Daniel Jones. The Giants have repeatedly claimed to be committed to him recently. However, their actions don’t necessarily match those claims. It was reported this weekend that they won’t pick up his 5th-year option, which makes you wonder just how committed they are to him.

However either of those situations plays out, it’s good to see that Joe Schoen is ready to do whatever he has to in order to fix the mess the Giants became during Dave Gettleman’s tenure.
