Scottie Scheffler Walks Back Promise To Leave The Masters If His Wife Goes Into Labor

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler promised earlier in the week that he would leave The Masters if his wife, Meredith, went into labor with their first child.

Despite a hot start that saw Scheffler climb up the leaderboard, he maintained that stance.

But now Scheffler sits alone atop the leaderboard at 7-under, and he’s apparently walked back his promise to leave a little.

Sirius XM golf reporter Jason Sobel that he would still leave the tournament if his wife goes into labor before the start of the final round.

That’s a subtle but notable difference from his stance earlier in the week, which stated that he would leave The Masters in any situation.

So Scheffler doesn’t need to worry about finishing his round before Meredith goes into labor. He only needs to make it to his tee time.

Would he really leave either way? He sure says so.

And the way that Scheffler previously talked about the birth of his child, we believe him.

“It’s going to be pretty wild. I don’t think it’s hit either of us quite yet but it’s an exciting time for us as a family,” he said earlier this year. “It’s been a pretty exciting last seven months or so and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting the baby out of there nice and healthy and with a healthy momma, and then we’ll go from there.”

Only time will tell. But more than anything we imagine Scottie is just hoping beyond hope that his wife and the baby wait just a little bit longer.

Scheffler tees off at 2:35 p.m. ET in the final group for the final round. He’ll pair with Colin Morikawa, who he leads by one stroke.
