After posting 101 wins during the regular season — one of the best returns in the history of the franchise — the New York Mets embarrassingly crashed out of the postseason on Sunday night following a Game 3 loss to the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card round. For a 101 team that boasted the league’s highest payroll, being knocked out before even reaching the NLDS is a seismic disappointment no matter how you slice it.
Making matters worse for Mets fans — other than the fact that their starting pitching completely let the team down when it mattered most of the last two weeks — is that in the deciding, winner-take-all Game 3 against the Padres, the offense posted just ONE hit and ONE walk, a truly abysmal offensive performance in a late July regular season game, let alone a must-win playoff game.
Following the shocking, yet still somewhat expected, loss to the Padres, Mets fans hopped on Twitter to share their sorrows after another exciting season concludes with absolutely nothing to show for it.

After 7 innings, the Mets have 1 FUCKING hit. That's right, ONE. That's Joe Musgrove throwing a CUP OF BLOW ME, take a swallow and choke on it, Mets.#PadresTwitter

mets player’s wife: choke me

The Mets paid Max Scherzer a lot of money to choke two weekends in a row.

Smh. Mets can’t accept that their choke job is continuing into the postseason so they’re going to accuse Joe Musgrove of cheating.

“They didn’t choke. 101 wins is a great year.”

Remember when the Mets paid Scherzer $43M this year to choke in the two biggest starts of their season? Lmao me too

As a result of their Wild Card round victory over the New York Mets, the San Diego Padres will now go on to face the 111-win Los Angeles Dodgers, arguably the best team in baseball, in the National League Divisional Series. The Mets, with the highest payroll in baseball, will be going home.
Elsewhere in MLB, the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Guardians all advanced to the divisional series, which will begin this week.
