Juuling and Fortnite are arguably the two hottest cultural phenomena of 2018. No matter where you go, there’s practically bound to be *someone* with a Juul in their hands. College kids love Juuling so much that some even write essays about how they boldly charge their Juuls in class. Brave!
All that cultural clout, however, has attracted the attention of the FDA, which is ticked about the uptick of Juuling amongst teenagers.
Last week they raided the offices of Juul headquarters in San Francisco to seize documents related to how they market the product. According to CNBC, “FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb calls teen use of nicotine vaping devices an ‘epidemic.'”The FDA is calling on Juul to address the issue. CNBC also estimates that Juul has a MASSIVE 73% market share of the e-cig business, which continues to boom:
Juul, which controls about 73 percent of the market, has been at the center of the FDA’s attention this year as e-cigarette use soars among teens.
The inspection comes weeks after the FDA announced a crackdown that requires e-cig manufacturers, including Juul, to submit plans to address youth use of their products within 60 days. The agency also threatened to ban some flavored nicotine liquids, which critics say attract kids to e-cigarettes.
Does the regulatory pressure mean bad days ahead for Juul? Here’s the company’s official response:
