John Daly Reportedly Smoked A Laughable Number Of Cigarettes During His First Round At The PGA Championship

John Daly has been one of the most beloved golfers on the planet for over three decades thanks in no small part to his behavior on and off the course, and his legend has only grown thanks to what transpired during the first round of the 2024 PGA Championship.

In 1991, John Daly took the golf world by storm thanks to his stunning victory at the PGA Championship, a tournament where he only got the chance to compete after he replaced another competitor as the final alternate at the last minute.

That ended up being the only major victory of his career, but it also earned Daly a lifetime exemption that the 58-year-old continues to take full advantage of as he navigates the twilight of his career.

Daly initially became a fan favorite thanks to his power off of the tee and the flashy outfits he has a tendency to rock on the course, and while he may not be the golfer he once was, the man who posts up in an RV in the parking lot of the Hooters near Augusta National during The Masters every year still has a devoted cult following.

On Thursday, Daly played his 30th opening round at the PGA Championship when it kicked off at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

He relied on a golf cart to get around and ultimately arrived at the clubhouse at +11 over 18 holes before deciding to withdraw from the tournament on Friday morning. That score may not have turned any heads, but the same can’t be said for another stat line he posted.

Gabby Herzig of The Athletic followed Daly’s group toward the end of his lone round and got a hilarious scoop courtesy of a volunteer who was assigned to the trio, as he apparently went through a couple of packs of cigarettes along with four Snickers and two cans of Coke (regular, not Diet) by the time he wrapped things up.

Sounds about right.
