The First Trailer For ‘Dark Phoenix’ Sees Sophie Turner As The Most Powerful, Unstable Mutant Yet

Just when we think we’re getting a little bored with superhero movies along comes Venom, Captain Marvel, and now, Dark Phoenix and we’re sucked right back in.

The fact that Marvel, especially the Sony and 20th Century Fox versions of Marvel movies, are going a little darker than your average Marvel Studios movie, is an exciting new, and long overdue, twist to the genre.

(I know DC Comics has done it, but, well, they can’t even CGI a moustache, so…)

With Dark Phoenix, whose first trailer just dropped, we get to see one of the best stories ever to appear in comics. The Dark Phoenix Saga is of monumental importance to the X-Men universe as Jean Grey becomes arguably the most powerful mutant ever thanks to the Phoenix Force, but with that power comes some serious instability.

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Dark Phoenix also sees the return of Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters). Jessica Chastain also stars as a mysterious white-haired shapeshifter.

Dark Phoenix hits theaters February 14, 2019.
