Many younger NFL fans may not know much about the history of the Tennessee Titans and their time in Houston as the Oilers.
Before becoming the Titans in 1998 (the team was called the Tennessee Oilers in 1997 and 1998 after moving), the Oilers began play as a charter member of the AFL in 1960.
The Oilers appeared in the first three AFL championship games, winning the first one in 1960 over the then Los Angeles Chargers, then backing it up with another championship over the Chargers (now in San Diego) in 1961.
Following some rough years after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Oilers would go on to consistently be one of the best teams in the AFC, but unfortunately played in the same division as the Pittsburgh Steelers who would win four Super Bowls in the 1970s.
Those teams featured a bruising running attack headed by Hall of Famer Earl Campbell, who scored 19 touchdowns in 1979 and rushed for a career-high 1,934 yards in 1980.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Oilers made the playoffs seven straight years with five-time CFL Grey Cup champion Warren Moon under center using the new run-and-shoot offense that often featured up to five wide receivers. This despite being in the same division as a very good Cleveland Browns team that won the AFC Central in 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989.
The defense was no slouch either as the Astrodome was nicknamed The House of Pain, which also given to the dome due to the loud, raucous fans in attendance during the “Luv Ya Blue” era.

It is that history that makes the Tennessee Titans move to add new Houston Oilers throwback uniforms to their look for two games during the 2023 NFL season so special.

“I know Tennessee has virtually zero relevance to oil exploration and production, but the throwback Oilers uniforms should be the @Titans permanent uniforms,” another fan tweeted. “One of the greatest uniforms ever.”
