In the immortal words of rock and roll legend Jim Croce, “you don’t tug on Superman’s cape.”
Apparently, West Virginia women’s basketball coach Mark Kellogg is much of a Jim Croce fan.
Kellogg’s Mountaineers drew the No. 8 seed in the Albany 2 region of the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament.
That means a potential second-round matchup with the top-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes and superstar Caitlin Clark.Kellogg’s response to that seed?
WVU HC Mark Kellogg with some strong words
“Let’s win one and send Caitlin Clark packing”
— Wesley Shoemaker (@wesleyshoe)
“Let’s win one and send Caitlin Clark packing,” he said
Oh, Mark. That is BOLD.
West Virginia went 23-6 in its first season under Kellogg. And the 48-year-old has an impressive track record of success at every single coaching stop he’s made at the college level.
So you can understand the confidence. Clearly, it works for him.
But, for one, West Virginia must first take out ninth-seeded Princeton before it even gets a shot at Clark. Then, if they do, the Mountaineers need to find a way to slow down the most impressive scorer that NCAA Division I basketball has ever seen, man or woman.
That’s a tall task!
And look, you’d expect nothing different from a competitor. Kellogg and his team aren’t just going to bow down and roll over (looking at you, Michigan Wolverines). But still, you’d think you’d have a little more tact here.
Clark has a long track record of absolutely torching teams that have the nerve to try to call her out.
Like the high school student section that decided to repeatedly shower Clark with “overrated” chants, only for Clark to drop 42 on their heads.
Or, y’know, the 35 points she dropped on the Iowa State Cyclones when their fans tried to pull the same thing.
Clark has risen to the occasion almost every time of asking throughout her career. So giving the future No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft even more motivation just feels like Sideshow Bob stepping on a rake.
