French cyclist Maxime Roger was in the middle of a time trial at the Tour de Moselle in northeastern France on Saturday when his bike decided to self-destruct. Hitting a speed of 36 mph, the handlebars of Roger’s bike mysteriously just fell off, sending the cyclist tumbling over the front of the bike and sliding eloquently into a bed of overgrown bed of grass.
Roger was in second place heading into the stage but he had to call it quits after the crash. As Deadspin points out, when you watch the video in slow motion, once Roger’s hog hits the stem of the handlebars, he puts his right foot down to brace for impact and his front tire explodes.
Roger told DirectVelo after the crash that he avoided serious injury, and could even come back by the end of the month. When the skin regenerates in both of his hands.
