Christopher Nolan may be fresh off of the first Academy Award wins of his career does not mean the acclaimed director is about to sit on his laurels.

According to reports, the 53-year-old filmmaker — fresh off of winning both Best Picture and Best Director (among other awards) for his work on Oppenheimer — is set to begin writing his next project now that awards season is over.

While nothing is confirmed, Variety has reported that there is speculation Nolan’s next project could be a remake of the 1960s mystery-thriller TV series The Prisoner.

“Some say it will be a remake of the mystery-thriller The Prisoner, based on the 1960s TV series created by and starring Patrick McGoohan, which Nolan was attached to in 2009.

“But the sci-fi project vanished from Nolan’s dance card that same year, when AMC released its own The Prisoners, a six-part miniseries led by Jim Caviezel as the ill-fated agent Number Six alongside Ian McKellen and Ruth Wilson. Others say he will begin writing a new screenplay now that the awards season is behind him.” [via Variety]

The Prisoner, which ran in England for just one season in 1967, follows an unnamed British intelligence officer known only as “Number Six” who finds himself abducted and then imprisoned in a mysteriou costal village.

The series, described as being “surreal and Kafkaesque”, was a mix of sci-fi, spy fiction, and psychological thriller, and touched on themes such as individualism (Number Six) and collectivism (the Village).

There has also been long-running speculation that the producers of the James Bond franchise could be eyeing Nolan, especially considering he’s long been vocal about his love of the character. Any discussion about Nolan directing the next Bond movie, however, is purely fan-fueled speculation.

Whatever Nolan does direct next, it will be the 13th feature film of his career following Following (1998), Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002), Batman Begins (2005), The Prestige (2006), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), Tenet (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023).
