The Buffalo Bills want changes made to the NFL’s overtime rules, specifically in the postseason.

Who can blame them? Josh Allen’s Bill and Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs combined for 25 points in 2 minutes of the 4th quarter in the Divisional Round and then the Bills didn’t even get the ball under the NFL overtime rules for a rebuttal.

It has seemed like change is coming to the NFL overtime rules since January. That’s when reports first began to circulate that the league would examine its existing rules. Ultimately, any changes will need to be voted on by the owner’s meetings which will be held at The Breakers in Palm Beach at the end of March.

On Tuesday, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane shared details about the changes put forth by Buffalo. This is on top of overtime changes already suggested by the Indianapolis Colts.

Bills General Manager Brandon Beane said: “I do think there will be some changes. I don’t know how many proposals (there have been). We definitely put our stamp on one. Ours is going to be more, without getting into detail, instead of one possession and then another possession, is the time. You know, similar to basketball. You play five minutes of basketball. Both teams get (a chance). You know, baseball, there’s the top half and the bottom half. So a time limit, and we’re talking about the postseason only, to play it out. And that way, both teams will definitely have a chance and maybe even more than one possession.”

It didn’t end there he added “I just think let’s play it out, a certain amount of time. I don’t know that that’ll be the final result in March at the owners meetings, but I think there’s gonna be some good proposals and hopefully it at least comes to the point where both teams get an opportunity.”

Changes To Time?

They’re trying to turn football into baseball? Into basketball? And this is based on time? Are we getting a shot clock on teams in overtime?

He’s not giving us much to go on here other than the notion that both teams get the ball at least once in overtime and this implementation will be based on time. They could easily tweak the existing NFL overtime rules to ensure that the other team gets the ball back even if the first team scores a touchdown. Boom, discussion over.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott didn’t mince words when talking about why they’re putting forth this rule change. The team is still bitter. He told USA Today “Yeah, I’ll just speak in general terms, I think, experiencing what we experienced overall, I think there’s a better way out there. And when you go through experiences like that and you experience those things first-hand in particular, you want to evolve the game. I’m not going to get into the details of it, that’s for another meeting here. But we’ve got some ideas and I think they’ll help move the game forward. And we’ll see where it goes.”

The NFL’s Competition Committee will meet in Indianapolis this week and they are expected to discuss these proposed rule changes to the NFL overtime rules.
