Last week, Ariana Grande released a deluxe edition of her first studio album, Yours Truly, to celebrate its 10-year anniversary as the project was initially released on August 30, 2013.
The updated version of Yours Truly features a new live version of the song, which Grande recorded with Mac Miller prior to the rapper’s passing in 2018.
In a video for the song that was recently posted to Grande’s YouTube, the singer pays homage to Miller — who she dated from 2016 to 2018 — by “fading out the background of the clip except for the words ‘Feat. Mac Miller,’ which glow in white at the end,” as pointed out by Entertainment Weekly.
Furthermore, the new version of “The Way” features an orchestral string section backing up Miller’s second verse instead of the instrumental that was featured in the original version of the song.
Grande paying tribute to Miller, however, has seemingly angered some people on the internet, as a tweet saying she’s “going to hell” has racked up over 65,000 likes on Twitter at the time of this writing.

“The Way,” which was first released back in March 2013, was the lead single from Yours Truly, Grande’s first studio album.
Miller, one of the most beloved rappers of his generation, passed away at the age of 26 years old following an overdose in September 2018. His final album Swimming was released about a month prior to his passing and would go on to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
