The Backyard Brawl is fully back, as the Pitt Panthers and West Virginia Mountaineers will face off for the second year in a row, following an 11-year hiatus in the long rivalry. Last year’s edition of the Backyard brawl resulted in an electric 38-31 Pitt home win that came down to the wire, which means that this year the two teams will square off at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia. Both teams come into this rivalry game needing a big win to boost their season, as each squad sits at 1-1 after 2 weeks. However, while Pitt comes into this game on the heels of a loss, the Mountaineers come into this game fresh off a blowout win, and they have the home-field advantage in this one.

Let’s take a look at the visiting Pitt Panthers, who come into this game after dropping their last one at home against Cincinnati. They fell behind by 2 scores at the half, and made a comeback bid in the 4th quarter, but ultimately couldn’t overcome the deficit they were in, losing 27-21. Pitt QB Phil Jurkovec struggled to find a rhythm, going just 10/32 for 179 yards, however tossing 3 touchdowns and no picks. 2 of the touchdowns came in the 4th quarter, so Jurkovec will look to build off a strong finish to an inconsistent game.

The running game will need to make a bigger impact as well if the Panthers want to steal a road game this week. The defense bounced back in the second half after a rough start and was able to keep the team within striking distance until the end. If Pitt can just not dig themselves in an early hole again, they have to like their chances in this one.

However, the hosting West Virginia Mountaineers will not be an easy foe. This is a team coming off a bounce-back 56-17 home win against Duquesne, following a loss in their first game to 7th-ranked Penn State, so the Mountaineers have already faced one of the best teams in the nation to prepare for this Backyard Brawl. QB Garrett Greene had a solid game last week, throwing for 240 yards and 4 touchdowns with no picks. WR Hudson Clement had a massive 177-yard and 3-touchdown effort, while RB Jahiem White added over 100 yards on the ground and a score. Obviously, they are up against a stiffer challenge than Duquesne this week, but I do believe that they will find a way to carry over the momentum from last week and get a close home win against Pitt.

The Pitt Panthers are a class beyond West Virginia. Bet on Pittsburgh and enjoy that $200 offer from DraftKings.
