FC Barcelona is one of the biggest clubs in the world, without a doubt. But, the footballing giants must be desperate for money, as they’re asking their players to travel and play a ridiculous amount in a short amount of time.
The team plays a La Liga match at home against Almeriá on Wednesday, and is flying to the United States to play Mexican club América in Dallas in a friendly on Thursday evening.
Normally, a team would split their squad in half in a unique circumstance such as this to give their players ample rest. But, according to ESPN, it doesn’t appear the club is going to do that.
It appears that many of the same players who play on Wednesday night will be asked to make the trip to Dallas to play in a meaningless match that’s about 30 hours later. That’s pretty irresponsible, in my opinion.
So, why would Barcelona do this? Money. The team took on huge debt in the 2010s as they renovated their stadium, Camp Nou, and spent lavishly on players. According to the Associated Press, the club is over $500 million in debt. The match will sell a ton of tickets and make a ton of money.
So far, the season hasn’t been going to plan for FC Barcelona. They’re fourth in La Liga, nine points back of Girona and seven points back of Real Madrid. They’re only three points from falling out of qualifying for the Champions League. That would present a significant financial setback for the club.
