It’s been close to a year since the Dan Snyder Era came to a merciful end after the Washington Commanders were sold to a group of buyers led by Josh Harris, and his wife Marjorie implied a name change is still being taken into consideration as the franchise gears up for its second season under its new owners.
Dan Snyder’s time as the owner of the team that is now known as the Washington Commanders was defined by an impressive amount of incompetence and controversy, which obviously included the decades-long discourse surrounding the name the franchise abandoned when it rebranded as the Washington Football Team in 2020.
That name was always meant to be a placeholder, but there are plenty of people who thought the team should’ve stuck with it when they learned it had decided to adopt the Commanders moniker prior to the start of the 2022 campaign.
When Josh Harris became the primary owner of the Commanders after the franchise changed hands for over $6 billion last summer, he made it very clear he was going to do everything in his power to put Snyder’s disastrous tenure in the rearview mirror while ushering in a new era (which now includes the installation of a new GM, head coach, and starting quarterback).
Harris has also made it clear a potential name change isn’t his top priority (he has firmly ruled out a return to the so-called “R-Words”), but according to a recent survey conducted by The Washington Post, 58% of Commanders fans in the D.C. area have a negative view of the current one.
On Wednesday, Harris’ wife and co-owner Marjorie got the chance to address that issue while echoing his sentiments during a discussion with reporters where she didn’t rule out a switch but made it clear it’s not a pressing issue in the front office.
Had the opportunity to ask Commanders owner Majorie Harris about the team name:
"Quite frankly, I had a whole day out in the community, and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders. And you know what? Sounds pretty good to me. So, for now, it's the Commanders." pic.twitter.com/SdsORINpYu

Here’s what she had to say:
“As you can imagine, everybody has an opinion about the name—some good, some bad, some in the middle, and I think that we have a lot of work to do. So, that name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going.
Quite frankly, I had a whole day out in the community and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders and you know what? Sounds pretty good to me, so, for now, it’s the Commanders.”
Based on those comments, it’s pretty clear the door is still wide open for a new approach at some point, but you’re not going to want to hold your breath.
