Tiger Woods is $8 million richer after being named the winner of the PGA Tour’s first annual Player Impact Program.

News of the PIP bonus was revealed back in April of 2021 with a $40 million bonus pool being rewarded to golf’s biggest stars regardless of how they perform on the golf course. The money is awarded to the players who engage fans the most.

Woods winning the PIP is just the latest example of him still being the biggest name in the sport. He played in just one tournament in all of 2021, the PNC Championship alongside his son Charlie.

The 15-time major winner suffered his horrendous car crash in February of 2021 and wasn’t even seen in public for months, yet still had the biggest impact on fans in the sport.

Woods winning the bonus shouldn’t be all that surprising, but it may catch one person off guard, and that’s Phil Mickelson.

On December 29, Mickelson

that he had won the PIP. What Mickelson didn’t realize is that Woods’ appearance at the PNC Championship in mid-December still had to be measured. Team Woods’ appearance in the two-day tournament clearly seems to have given Tiger the final edge over Mickelson.

It’s not all that bad for Mickelson, however, he still received $6 million for finishing runner-up in the final PIP standings. One can only imagine if his recent comments calling the PGA Tour a “dictatorship” impacted his chances of taking home the top prize.

The PGA Tour

that it wouldn’t be revealing the final standings of the PIP, but decided to publish them on Wednesday.
