The best case scenario would be that the team stays healthy, answers a few questions with a ‘Yes’ and makes a deep playoff run. Maybe even to the Eastern Conference finals, or beyond. Two preseason statements that apply to both Chicago and Miami as the pair are set to open the regular season against one another.
Somehow the Eastern Conference has become pretty loaded and picking an early season favorite could be a difficult task. Chicago owned the best record in the conference before injuries to Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso and Patrick Williams put a halt to that. All save for Ball are ready to return to the lineup with DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vucevic and a supporting cast that is actually quite deep.
Some combination of Goran Dragic, Alex Caruso, Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White will have to replace Ball. Each does something that Ball does, none do close to it all. Caruso figures to see plenty of time because his defense is clearly the most similar to Ball and the team will need it. Offensively, Dragic or White could put up points in spurts. That trio has to mind the ship.
The only other major addition to the roster is Andre Drummond. For all of his flaws — and haters — he can rebound.
That is a skill that the Bulls will need, especially with a second unit. He is also just 29 — even if it feels like he is 39.Miami has a trio of stars ready to roll.
Jimmy Butler is back, Tyler Herro got paid, and Bam Adebayo is now firmly placed among the best in the league at his position.
Even with those three, there are surrounding questions. What is left of Butler and the miles on his 33-year-old legs? Is Herro able to make others better even though he is only one of a select few players on the roster that can create for himself? Is Bam ready to take a step forward offensively or is what we saw last year what we get?
Chicago has one of the deepest teams in the league — let alone conference — and could legit run a full second unit if Billy Donovan wants to. With the season set to start and legs not fully underneath people, it’ll be that depth that gives Chicago a perception upset here.
