It wasn’t that long ago that New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was considered the best closer in all of baseball. He was absolutely electric in 2022, when he had one of the best seasons of relief pitching ever.
But, after missing all of last season after an injury suffered while celebrating in the World Baseball Classic, Edwin Diaz has struggled mightily recently.
That led to Diaz breaking down in tears after yet another blown save on Saturday against the Miami Marlins.Diaz actually had a solid start to the season, even though it wasn’t as good as his incredible 2022. In 2022, he pitched to a 1.3 ERA with over 17 strikeouts per 9 innings and a WHIP of around .8. That is absolutely dominant.
That guy is simply not there for the Mets right now. He’s blown three straight saves in a row, including giving up four runs to the lowly Marlins in the 9th inning on Sunday. That’s only hurt the Mets, who are reeling even after a 7-3 win over Miami on Sunday.
Apparently, Diaz broke down in tears after speaking with the media on Saturday night and will step back from his closer role, according to Steve Gelbs. Take a listen.

Hopefully, Edwin Diaz can get into a better headspace and regain the form that made him one of the league’s best closers soon. In the meantime, Reed Garrett, who has been fantastic this year for the Mets, will close.
