The Patriots are currently a shell of their former self, and one Jeopardy! contestant who roots for them didn’t miss out on the chance to fire a shot at the team while revealing he used some of his winnings to cope with the sorry state of the franchise.
It’s hard to feel bad for New England Patriots fans who’ve had to endure a pretty lackluster product over the past few years when you consider they didn’t have much to complain about in the two decades that preceded the current slump.
With that said, any sports fan who cheers for a team that’s won a championship (or has been lucky enough to benefit from a dynasty) knows previous successes only do so much to ease the pain of current woes; you could even argue being accustomed to winning makes crashing down to Earth even harder to swallow.
That brings us to Jake DeArruda, a Vermont native and Patriots fan who currently works as a delivery dispatcher in Taunton, Massachusetts and got the chance to compete on Jeopardy! last year.
He was able to hold his own on the show, as he won three games while walking away with $68,661 (plus the $2,000 he made for coming in second during his fourth appearance) and earned the right to head back to Los Angeles for the Tournament of Champions.
DeArruda competed in a game that aired on Wednesday, and during the interview segment, he got the chance to tell Ken Jennings he spent his winnings on “sports gambling, women, and alcohol.”
How TOC player Jake DeArruda spent his original Jeopardy winnings.
"Sports gambling, women and alcohol…
"$20 on a CFB pick 'em…$20 to take my date and I to the top of the Gillette Stadium lighthouse…Several 4 packs of hard cider to get through the awful Patriots season." pic.twitter.com/tomPBOaJ5F

He quickly specified the exact nature of those expenditures, saying:
“By that, of course, I mean I spent $20 on a college football pick’em that went horribly wrong, $20 to take my date and I to the top of the Gillette Stadium lighthouse, and several four-packs of hard cider to get through the awful Patriots season I endured.”
Boom roasted.
