The final hand had a dramatic and inconceivable finish that left the players and crowd stunned. During the final hand of the 2017 World Series of Poker, Scott Blumstein won the WSOP with one flip of a card on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Blumstein, a 25-year-old Temple University graduate with a degree in accounting from Moorestown, New Jersey, was dealt an A-2 offsuit.
Dan Ott from Altoona, Pensylvania Ott went all-in with an ace of diamonds and an eight of diamonds. The community cards were a jack of spades, a six of spades, a five of hearts, and a seven of hearts. Ott had a 93% chance of winning, the only thing that could stop him from winning the title was one of three deuces. One of those deuces, the two of hearts, came on the river, changing the fortunes of both players and handing the most prestigious title in poker to Blumstein (The winning flip happens at the 11-minute mark). Blumstein walked away with the WSOP title, the $8.15 million prize, and the coveted WSOP bracelet.“I’m just in utter shock right now,” Blumstein said. “Two weeks ago, I was just a kid who loved to play poker and somehow here I am the champion of the main event. Now I’m just thinking about the past six or seven years, all the events that led up to this. I’m just living a dream.”
Finally, after besting 7,200 participants, 246 hands of poker and 6 hours and 40 minutes after the final round started, Ott took home $4.7 million for second place.
“I’m really happy about how I played tonight,” said Blumstein. “This is just one poker tournament. It takes variance and luck and playing your best, and all those things came together, and I’m happy to be the winner.”
