The nation of Pakistan woke up this morning licking its wounds after their national Cricket team lost to Team USA in the Men’s T20 World Cup in what is being called the biggest upset in Cricket history.
For context, Team USA didn’t even qualify for the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup on merit.
As the host nation, the US Team were automatically gifted a spot. And it was only the second Cricket World Cup the US team has ever played while Pakistan was in the finals of the last World Cup and is one of the global powerhouses in the sport that evidently pales in difficulty to baseball. After the monumental upset, social media exploded with Kenny Powers x American Flag GIFs with millions of people who don’t know the first thing about Cricket, myself included, beaming with American pride.
And to make things even sweeter, there were multiple days of discourse on X (formerly Twitter) leading up to this with Britons foolishly arguing that Cricket requires more skill and is a more difficult sport than baseball. Those arguments started around this thread:
I genuinely think if the average American watched a single game of top level cricket their head would Simply Explode. https://t.co/Xv1wVR5JGk

Then, Team USA beat Pakistan in the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup with a team where the best player is a huge nerd and has a sick full-time job in Silicon Valley at Oracle:

The New York Times published an article this morning following US Cricket’s incredible upset over Pakistan. Reporter Zia ur-Rehman was in Kirachi, Pakistan speaking with locals about the upset and discovered just how down bad Pakistanis are after the upset.
26-year-old Jaffer Ahmed said “This is unbelievable and embarrassing. How can we, with our cricketing history, lose to a country that doesn’t even have cricket in its DNA?”
Has nobody ever told Jaffer Ahmed that the US is #1 at being #1???
Muhammad Sagheer told the Times “We should be teaching the U.S.A., not losing to them.” Pakistan next faces India, their most bitter rival and next-door neighbor, and Sagheer questions how Pakistan stands a chance against India if they couldn’t beat the US Cricket team which was made up of people who absolutely DO NOT play the sport full-time.
‘Embarrassing’ began to trend on X with people sharing how Wales failing to score agains the 203rd best team wasn’t even the most embarrassing thing to happen in Cricket yesterday. And how Pakistan losing to the US at their #1 sport is embarrassing on a historic level. I’m not up to date on the level of banter in Cricket but this will surely bring out the hecklers for years to come, right?
This upset over Pakistan should lead to some change in the sport. Firstly, we should stop calling it an upset soon because the USA is #1 at being #1 at everything and once we started playing Cricket we were immediately the best in the world at the sport, obviously.
Secondly, this should settle the Cricket vs Baseball argument and all of the countries playing Cricket should be forced to nuke the leagues and adopt baseball as it is a vastly superior sport and American collegiate and HS baseball players could make better throws than some of the highlights of the Pakistani team.
Team USA Cricket is first in its group, obviously, as we’re the best at being the best. They have 2 wins in 2 games. And their next match comes against India on Wednesday, June 12th, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Long Island. All of the NYC-area BroBible readers looking for something to do on Wednesday, hit that up and delete some drinks in the bleachers!
