LeBron James became eligible for an extension with the Lakers on Thursday, now having the option to sign a deal that keeps in LA for the next two seasons.
That extension is
While he did become eligible for the extension, LeBron has plenty of time to decide on his Lakers’ future. The superstar has another year left on his current contract, meaning he has through June of next year to make a decision.
James met with general manager Rob Pelinka on Thursday to discuss options with the team. Talks were apparently “productive.”
NBA personality
“Even though we were circling this August 4th date on our calendar, there is nothing imminent, sources tell me, between the Lakers and LeBron’s camp in terms of coming to an agreement on a deal. It could look a variety of ways if they come to that agreement.
“It could be the two-year, $97M extension. It could be a one-year, $47M extension with a player option to give him some security. Or, we could see LeBron just not engage in those talks and wait to see what the Lakers’ front office can do for him in terms of making this team competitive.
“There are two things that matter most for LeBron as he looks at the final stage of his career. Adding to his four championships collection, and also finding an opportunity, if his son is eligible to make it to the NBA, finding an opportunity to be a father-son duo on the same team. Theoretically, the Lakers can provide both of those opportunities to LeBron.”
LeBron wants the Lakers to improve the lineup, and also a possible shot to play with his son, Bronny, who was recently seen training at the LA facility.
While the two sides likely aren’t close to completing the deal, fans were quick to comment on the positive talks between LeBron and the Lakers.
