The entire NFL season was turned upside down in Week 1 when newly-acquired New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers injured his Achilles just a few snaps into his much-anticipated Jets debut. But, the NFL legend has been rehabbing hard to try to make a miracle return to the NFL this year.
It would truly be a miracle, indeed.
Achilles tear rehabs usually last close to a year before an athlete is anywhere close to their pre-injury level. But, Aaron Rodgers has been doing his best to make it back.He hinted at an attempt to return to the Jets in the 2023 season soon after on weekly appearances on The Pat McAfee Show, and joked about alternative treatments like listening to dolphin sounds.
And, last week, the Jets opened the 21-day return-to-play window for the quarterback off of injured reserve, fueling speculation that the quarterback would indeed return for the Jets this year.
But, with the Jets now sitting at 4-7 after a promising start that had them in the hunt even without Rodgers, and it doesn’t make a ton of sense for Aaron Rodgers to rush back.
But, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport , that’s unlikely to happen.
“After talking to sources throughout the week about Rodgers’ situation, here’s the summation of where it all stands: It’s appearing unlikely that Rodgers plays in a game at all this season.
If the Jets are eliminated from the playoff picture , Rodgers is not expected to play, sources say. Not a surprise, but that’s where it stands. New York is 4-7 and its playoff chances hang by a thread.
A loss today would make the climb even tougher. Rodgers has loosely targeted the Dec. 24 game against the Washington Commanders as his potential return date, but if the Jets are out of it by then, don’t expect a return,” he said.As much as I think Aaron Rodgers wants to come back, this is the smart plan heading into next year, when the Jets should be contenders with a healthy quarterback.
